Fulbright scholars program eligibility criteria for Foreign Students in U.S. 2020-2021
Applicants of the Fulbright scholars program are typically expected to fulfill each and every criterion of eligibility before the application deadline unless and until particular exemptions are applied.
U.S. citizenship is not enough to obtain the award. Even if you don’t own a U.S. citizenship but wish to apply for an international U.S Fulbright scholars program, you’re only required to visit the visiting Fulbright Scholar Program.
If you’ve received a Fulbright scholars program in the past, you’ll be required to wait 2 years after the completion of your previous award/grant before applying for another Fulbright scholarship.
This Fulbright scholars program applicants who spend five or more successive years in a period of six years prior to the date of application submission will not receive the award.
Selected candidates must show evidence of sound medical/mental health via health certificate.
Fulbright scholar program candidates shall not use the award to pursue any type of missionary, pastoral or professional religious pursuits.
U.S. Fulbright Scholars program applicants shall not engage in activities for which a legal license will be required.
Fulbright Scholars program applicants are required to also document any previous convictions of a misdemeanor or a felony, including Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Minor traffic/driving violations is not inclusive.
2020-2021 Fulbright scholarship program Requirements
Degree Requirements: candidates must read the descriptions on websites of universities where a specific Ph.D. degree or equivalent professional degree is required.
Early Career / Post doctoral Candidates:
These candidates are required to apply for a Fulbright Scholar program on a condition that they’ll be able to complete the requirements of their degree by the 1 of February. If not, they will be required to address the expected date of the completion of their degree.
Teaching Experience: All relevant Fulbright scholars programs are available at the post-secondary level; although they may vary by discipline requirements or experience.
Language Requirements: English is typically considered sufficient for the purpose of teaching. But command over foreign languages may be needed depending on the type of country, grant or the nature of the program.

The timeline for the start of applications for U.S. Fulbright scholars program is:
February: Competition for program opens.
September: reviewing program applications for completeness and eligibility. In an issue of a missing application component, such applicant affected will be notified immediately to provide additional documents. Complete applications are then forwarded for peer review.
October-November: Period when Peer Review Committees review applications by discipline to determine if or not applications qualify the eligibility requirements for consideration in the particular host country.
December: applicants are notified by e-mail if or not their application has been considered for further recommendation.
December-May: Binational Fulbright Commissions or U.S. Public Affairs Section looks into the applications and pick applicants for selection.
January-June: All recommended applicants are called forward to the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board for further process.
June: Details of the award are finalized.
